Foldables continue to gain ground

Smartphones with foldable screens continually win over consumers and continue to gain market share.

Data recently shared by the consultancy TrendForce shows a growth in foldable smartphones in the coming years. By the end of this year, 18.3 million pieces of equipment are expected to be shipped worldwide, a year-on-year growth of 43%. By 2027, these devices are expected to occupy 5% of the global smartphone market.

Chinese brands are behind this evolution. Oppo, Huawei and Xiaomi have been reducing costs and expanding their brand strategies. Still, it is the Korean Samsung that continues to lead the segment, although with a drop in its preponderance.

The consultant also highlights Apple, which to date has not yet presented proposals in this area, which could be negatively influencing consumers regarding foldables. The “unshakable obsession with user experience” and challenges related to hinge and display technologies could be factors in this silence from North American technology.
