EU USB-C standardization protocol gets new approval

The new legislation could save tons of e-waste.
The European Parliament voted in favor of standardizing the USB-C protocol on Community ground. The directive received 602 votes in favour, 13 against and 8 abstentions. The next step is approval by the European Council.
The measure will take effect from autumn 2024 for mobile phones, smartphones, tablets or cameras sold in the European Union. For laptops, the measure will only be effective from spring 2026.
According to GSM Arena, there is a series of other equipment covered by this new legislation, such as keyboards, mice, game consoles, headphones, earphones or portable speakers.
It is expected that European consumers will save around 250 million euros and save 11,000 tonnes of electronic waste.
