TikTok at risk of being banned from the EU?

At issue is compliance with community regulations, which provide for the protection of users, especially younger users.

“With younger audiences comes greater responsibility,” says Thierry Breton, European Commissioner, on Twitter. Representatives of the European Union met last week with the CEO of TikTok, Shou Zi, to discuss the social network's compliance with community regulation.

Brussels has been pressuring the social network to adhere to the Digital Services Act (DSA), which advocates greater moderation of content on online platforms, namely in terms of transparency in the reasons for deleting content or in the way advertisers define their audiences.

According to Breton, TikTok will have to comply with the European regulation well before the deadline of September 1, under penalty of sanctions of up to 6% of the company's annual revenue, with the possibility of escalating to banning the platform in the community space.

On the side of the Chinese social network, Caroline Greer, a spokesperson, tweeted that the platform is committed to complying with the DAS, GDPR laws and the Code of Good Practices on Misinformation.
