xrOS: Apple's first bet for extended reality

This is the bet on a new market segment since the launch of the first Apple Watch, in 2015.

Apple is preparing to enter the market of meta reality, according to analysts. Allegedly, Apple has already created a name for the dedicated platform, xrOS, thus showing signs of a possible launch as early as 2023. The speculation arose after the disclosure of trademark registration documents at Deep Dive LLC.

It is an Extended Reality platform, or in English eXtended Reality (XR), which mixes elements of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality.

According to Mark Gurman, from Bloomberg, the new XR device developed by Apple is expected to have its own Apple apps such as Messages or Maps. Apple has already registered the names “Reality One” and “Reality Pro” in the past. Furthermore, the company is not completely new to the field of Augmented Reality, as devices like the iPhone 13 and later are equipped with LiDAR sensors.
