Apple announces new AirTag security updates

Among the new features, Apple compromises with a better tracking precision for unknown AirTags, as well as a better support for stalking victims.

Apple has announced this week a few security updates regarding AirTags, launched last April. The company has disclosed a handful of features that may be live either on the next software update or as late as the ending of this year, in order to stop unwanted tracking.

These are some of the new security features:

  • New privacy warnings during AirTag setup: when using an AirTag for the first time, the user will be properly informed that AirTag is meant to track their own belongings, and that using AirTag to track people without consent is a crime in many regions around the world, and that law enforcement can request identifying information about the owner of the AirTag.

  • Alert issues for AirPods? ?Unknown Accessory Detected? alert: Some users were receiving this notification in the presence of their own AirPods. Apple now confirmed this alert will no longer be displayed in this situation.

  • Further support documentation: Apple is updating its unwanted tracking support article on apple.com to communicate the safety features built into AirTag, AirPods, and Find My network accessories. Users can now access explanations of which Find My accessories may trigger an unwanted tracking alert, more visuals to provide specific examples of such alerts, and updated information on what to do after receiving an alert, including instructions for disabling an AirTag, AirPods, or Find My network accessory.

  • Precision Finding: This feature will allow recipients of an unwanted tracking alert to locate an unknown AirTag with precision. iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and iPhone 13 users will be able to use Precision Finding to see the distance and direction to an unknown AirTag when it is in range.

  • Refining unwanted tracking alert logic: The unwanted tracking alert system will notify users earlier that an unknown AirTag or Find My network accessory may be traveling with them.

  • Tuning AirTag's sound: by adjusting the AirTag tone sequence with the loudest tones to make an unknown AirTag more easily findable.

Apple is also working on law enforcement regarding the misuse of AirTags, reminding that every AirTag has a unique serial number, and that every device is connected to a specific Apple ID, allowing to identify users that misuse Apple products.
