EU officializes the date for the obligatory use of USB-C

The new community directive stipulates the date from which all manufacturers in the community space must comply.

Last week, the European Commission set the date for starting the mandatory manufacture and sale of electronic equipment with the USB-C connection protocol, after the most recent approval by Parliament, in the last month of October.

As of December 27, 2024, all manufacturers will be required to comply with new European rules. In addition to smartphones, the diploma includes cameras, sound speakers, game consoles, mice, keyboards, among others. Equipment with charging power above 15W are also covered.

For laptops, the law takes effect from April 28, 2026.

On December 28, 2023, member states must publish their national laws and regulations on the matter, in order to ensure compliance with the community directive.

Among the various manufacturers, Apple is one of the manufacturers that has been generating a greater buzz on the subject, due to the internal Lightning protocol. With the deadlines given by the European Union, only iPhones 17 will have to comply with the mandatory USB-C regulation. However, rumors point out that the next iPhone 15, to be launched in September 2023, may already have USB-C connectivity.
