New rules for repair of equipment!

The European Union's new rules for the repair of equipment, which aim to promote sustainability and strengthen consumer rights, came into effect on July 30, 2024.

This new regulation, which must be adopted by all EU member states by 2026, includes the addition of 12 months to legal warranties when the consumer chooses to repair the equipment. These measures will be applied to various electronic equipment, including smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and computers directly.

The goal of the European Union is to reduce electronic waste and promote repair. To facilitate access, a European platform will also be created, where consumers can find repair shops.

Highlighted rules for equipment repair

These new repair obligations concern products that fall outside the legal warranty. This obligation consists of the duty of manufacturers to repair free of charge or at a reasonable price.

Another rule that will come into effect is the possibility for manufacturers to lend replacement equipment to the customer for free or for a reasonable fee during the repair period, or, if this is not possible, a refurbished product will be offered. Manufacturers will also be required to provide information about their repair services in a simple and easy way for free.

A European online platform for repair and reconditioning will also be created. The goal is to connect consumers with repair companies, but also with sellers and buyers of refurbished products.
