Apple's novelty is now available in national territory.
The satellite emergency SOS feature on the iPhone has arrived in Portugal, and is available for all iPhone 14 and later devices. The service was also launched in other countries, namely Austria, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
Satellite SOS technology was introduced last September, when the iPhone 14 was launched. It is a satellite connection system for when the user is in remote areas without a mobile network or Wi-Fi, and needs to contact emergency entities.
How does Satellite emergency work on iPhone?
To activate the satellite emergency signal on your iPhone, press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons until the SOS Emergency slider appears. Through a simple interface, the user will be able to answer brief questions about their health status with just touches on the screen, in order to quickly identify the location and the specific situation.
Then, the screen will guide the user with the direction in the sky to which they should point their iPhone. Once the connection is established, a series of information will be sent, such as the responses to the questionnaire, the user's location, altitude, iPhone battery level, and Medical ID information. Given the distance from the satellites, message transmission may take a few minutes.
Even for cases that are not considered urgent, this technology can also be very useful. For users who are traveling in remote and disconnected areas, they will be able to share their location via satellite with others via the Find application.
If you have an iPhone 14 or later, you just need to update to iOS 16.4, available now. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
