What is Face ID and how does it work?

Discover the technology behind Apple's facial recognition technology.

Face ID is an Apple system that allows you to recognize the face of an iPhone or iPad user. This is a biometric authentication method, that is, it collects physical data from the user to unlock the screen, confirm downloads from the App Store or make payments.

The technology behind Face ID is based on infrared, namely in mapping the user's face through various infrared points and an infrared camera. All these components are located in the upper notch, next to the inner chamber; which means that this zone on the iPhone or iPad must be clear for Face ID to work properly.

It is an authentication system already proven to be secure by Apple itself.
Face ID appeared in 2017, when the iPhone X was launched, as the successor to the hitherto adopted Touch ID; the fingerprint reader housed in the Home Button.

One of the biggest updates to Face ID took place this year with an update to iOS 15 which, due to pandemic requirements, now allows face recognition with a mask.
